Hi Chas, I came across your blog, and I like it. I know the feeling about changing the call sign. The last year I changed it 3 times. Back and forth. After I got my license in 1976 my call was PAØPSY, in 2008 I changed it in PA9B. But it feels like a unwanted divorce. So after a half year I went back to PAØPSY and the call was still available. Still I was not happy. The old call was too long. Now I changed it in PC4T, driving the Dutch authorities crazy, and I hope it will last. ;-)

Hi Chuck,

Nice to hear you again after an interval. I didn't know such a disaster had attacked you. The only good news was that all of you had been safe. Your signal was pretty good, even though it was really noisy on 40m last night. Your rebuilt antenna, a dream catcher antenna ?, seemed to do a decent job. I hope you won't have such a trouble any longer. I guess a vertical has less wind burden than a dipole. Why won't you try the former. Your pool must work a good ground so far as it is watered hi.

Anyway, I would like to hear your voice on CW again soon. Thanks again for your call, my friend.

Yes I believe you are correct. MIT turned over the administration to Lowell about 3 years ago. (Or more) The appearance of the historic data in the UCAR (sp?) database indicates to me that the sounder was operable and just the internet server portion was down. Perhaps it was the connection in its entirety that was broken while a local computer continued to spool data until the connection came back online. At any rate, while Millstone came back on line I lost the other sounder at my end of our circuit (near Dallas) at Dyess AFB in Abilene,Tx. We have been monitoring Millstone exclusively while maintaining our 14 Mhz schedule each day. Thanks so much for your notes. Best, Chas

For what it's worth, I went to the Haystack Observatory open house yesterday. Haystack is a radar/radio telescope facility where the Millstone Hill Digisonde is probably located (i.e., on Millstone Hill).

I asked Haystack's director about the Digisonde. As I expected, he didn't really know much about it. The Digisonde is probably run by U-Mass/Lowell, whereas Haystack is run by MIT. He said it is one of the unmanned experiments on site.

I see that the historical data is now there even through the period it seemed to be off-line. So my guess is the Digisonde itself stayed working and it was just the plotting program or website processing that was "off the air" earlier this year.

One of Haystack's other experiments is a pair of big dishes that periodically send 2.5 megawatts of 440.2 MHz at the ionosphere.

The Millstone Digisonde seems to be up and working again.

I hadn't checked in a few months, but the data there is up-to-date once again.

(If I get to their Open House next week, I'll ask them about it.)

I love reading all your posts - I started at the top and worked my way down which isn't the correct progression, but none the less, I have enjoyed all your thoughts and reflections. I agree about the passivity of this country and wish we just had two more hours in each day. I am glad spring is here - at least we have more sunlight - sunlight always makes me feel a little happier! I think it's great that you are going to grow tomatoes and makes me feel like being productive as well - I will have to research what vegetable Hannah and I would like to grow!

I love you Pops,

FB, on 40 I agree! As of late propagation out west into the pacific has been spectacular!

I was passing the radio at about 0900z and switched it on as a lark tunned down a few hertz and their is JO1CVU just booming in on SSB from Japan! Boy was I shocked when he returned my call to my peanut whistle of a station!

Along the same lines, that same week i worked Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Rhode Island all on 40!

Other then my constant ambient noise issues local to my QTH I've been enjoying 40!

Hi Chuck,
It was a really nice QSO. Since I have already visited your bolg before, I could not feel it was the 1st ever for us. Thanks for recording my signal there. It gives me an idea how my signal reaches there. I wish I could write my blog in English and communicate with the people leaving some comments. However, it is time consuming for me to do so. I would like to chat you on the air instead. Enjoy your healthy and fruitful retirement.
